Scores on the Doors

Scores on the Doors is a new food hygiene award scheme for food businesses in Rotherham.

Environmental Health officers at the Council routinely inspect food businesses as a part of a planned programme to check compliance with nationally set hygiene and food safety standards. Each inspection results in the food business being risk rated against these nationally agreed standards.

Once inspected, every restaurant, takeaway, hotel, bed and breakfast, cafe, sandwich shop, delicatessen and butchers will be awarded stars ranging from 5 stars (excellent) to no stars (meaning major improvements are required).

The score provides information as to the standards found (good and bad) at the time of the inspection.

The key areas that are considered for the food hygiene award are:

  • The ability of food business managers to maintain food safety systems of work (confidence in management).
  • Food handling practices e.g. temperature control, prevention of contamination (food hygiene and safety).
  • The cleanliness, layout and facilities provided (the structure of the business).
