                                                                                                                       Fairer Charging for Non-Residential Services

If you receive any of our non-residential services you can have a financial assessment to ensure you are only paying what you can afford.

Non residential services include things like home care, day sitting, night visiting etc.

This doesn't apply to meals on wheels or meals at a day centre which have a set charge that everyone has to pay.

A Financial Assessment Visiting Officer will visit you and help you fill in a form. As a result of the assessment some people pay less; some more but most pay nothing at all.

If you are receiving services and have not had a financial assessment then ask your social worker to arrange this for you.  When you are newly assessed as needing our non-residential services you will be automatically offered a financial assessment.

How do we do a financial assessment?

We look at what money you have coming in each week, what your savings are, what bills you have to pay and what extra cost you may have to pay for any special needs.

You will need to tell us what benefits you receive such as Income Support, Disability Living Allowance, Severe Disablement Allowance, etc.  But we do not look at any earnings or mobility allowance that you have.

You will also need to tell us about your savings. If you have over £21,500 then you will have to pay the maximum charge and will not need a financial assessment.

What happens if you don't want a financial assessment?

You do not have to have a financial assessment, but if you do we may be able to lower your charge. In some circumstances you may pay nothing at all.  We can also use this information to see if you are receiving all the cash help you are entitled to.

However, if you decide that you do not want a financial assessment you will have to pay the maximum charge for your care or the cost of your service, whichever is the lowest.

If you don't agree with the charge that has been worked out

You can ask for it to be looked at again. If you are still not happy with the way the charge has been worked out we will help you to make a complaint.

The Visiting Officer will give you more information when they visit you.
