Training and Support for Foster Carers

Ongoing training is essential, and you will be encouraged to attend this regularly throughout your fostering career. The initial preparation training is a good grounding for foster carers but carers are encouraged to continue to attend training. There are a number of training opportunities throughout the year including.

  • Child Protection
  • Safer caring
  • Attachment
  • First aid

There will also be opportunities to attend other courses, and also to discuss achieving NVQ qualification.

Support

We do not expect you to undertake the fostering task on you own and the placements that work best are those that work in partnership. You will have named fostering social worker and will be invited to become part of a monthly support group with other foster carers.

We have also developed a fostering support plan to address issues before carers reach the point where they feel they can't cope any more.
