Air Quality

Rotherham Council has a dedicated air quality team which carries out reviews and assessments of air quality in the Borough, as required by law.

Air pollution normally experienced in Rotherham is unlikely to have a serious impact on your health. However, for some people who already suffer from respiratory illnesses, such as asthma, air pollution can increase symptoms and occasionally trigger attacks.

To protect people sensitive to changes in pollution the Government has set health based air quality objectives for seven different air pollutants. All local authorities have a duty to try and achieve them.

Air quality objectives have been set for these pollutants:

• Nitrogen Dioxide
• Sulphur Dioxide
• Particulate Matter
• Carbon Monoxide
• Lead
• Benzene
• 1,3 Butadiene

The current target levels can be found in the Air Quality (England) Regulations 2000. You can see these on the This is an External Link icon Local Air Quality Management website run by The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and the Devolved Administrations.

Work has been undertaken throughout the borough in the following areas
