What is Rotherham Renaissance?

In the Autumn of 2001, Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency for Yorkshire and the Humber, launched its urban renaissance programme, recognising that although the countryside of the region is internationally acclaimed, confidence in its towns and cities has declined. To address the challenge of regeneration Yorkshire Forward brought together an 'urban renaissance panel' after an international call for expressions of interest. LDA Urban Design were chosen to be one of 13 practices on the panel and they have acted as facilitators to pulling together the vision for Rotherham.

The work has been funded by Yorkshire Forward.

In Rotherham development of the vision involved forming a 'town team' comprised of community, business and council interests. The 'town team' developed the vision, with LDA acting as facilitators and advisors to the process; where necessary bringing form to the group's dreams. School children were also involved and asked to imagine what their town could be.

The vision is just the first step in the process. Following on from the vision will be a masterplanning stage in which the ideas generated to date are explored in greater detail. The intention is that these more detailed proposals will be adopted as planning policy.

The aim of the vision has been to look at the town as a whole, identifying potential areas for redevelopment and examining how they all fit together.
