Cesspools & Septic Tanks

The Service the Council Provides:

We provide a service, within normal working hours, for over 500 customers for the emptying and disposal of Cesspools and Septic Tanks in Rotherham. The service includes the following:

  • One Off Emptying - this provides the customer with emptying as required.
  • Scheduled Emptying - the customer can arrange for the tank to be emptied at frequent times during the year. The Council's tanker will then empty the tank on behalf of the customer at the agreed time.
  • Emergency Emptying - the Council will liaise with the customer within 4 hours of receiving a request to empty a tank.
  • New Customers - will be provided with all information including mandates within one working day.
  • Flood Pump Outs - the Council's tanker can assist in dealing with flooding problems on request from the customer.

The Service the Customer can expect:

  • In normal circumstances, tanks will be emptied within 5 to 10 working days.
  • In urgent circumstance, the emtying of tanks will be carried out at the earliest opportunity as agreed with the customer.
  • The Council will obtain all information and costs directly from the Water Companies (Yorkshire Water and Severn Trent Water), and within one month the customer will be invoiced by the Council for all emptying and disposal costs.
  • Any faults within the tanks, reported by the tanker driver, will be forwarded to the customer immediately.
  • A full risk assessment for emptying tanks is carried out by the Council prior to the work commencing.

Charges as at February 2007

Charges depend on:-

  • the amount of waste
  • whether the waste is classified as 'weak', 'standard', or 'strong';
  • the relevant water company area
  • whether there are Health & Safety problems at the site
  • whether additional hoses are needed
  • whether there are traffic problems

There are two water companies operating within the borough of Rotherham. These companies are Yorkshire Water and Severn Trent Water, and each company has varying disposal charges.

Typical charges for the tanker and disposal costs are as follows:

Cesspool Emptying and Disposal per 4,546 litres (1,000 gallons)

1 man gang and vehicle:- from £82.84 to £90.60
2 man gang and vehicle:- from £102.84 to £110.60

Septic Tank (Cesspit) Emptying and Disposal per 4,546 litres (1,000 gallons)

1 man gang and vehicle:- from £110.43 to £116.05
2 man gang and vehicle:- from £130.43 to £136.05

Guidance Notes

  • Volumes greater than 4,546 litres (1,000 gallons) will be charged per gallon pro rata in Yorkshire Water areas and per 5,455 litres (1,200 gallons) loads in Severn Trent Water areas.
  • A 2 man gang and vehicle will be used where there are Health and Safety issues, where additional hoses are required for emptying purposes and where there are traffic management implications.
  • Water companies have varying waste water disposal and treatment charges, i.e. for 'weak', 'standard' or 'strong' waste.
  • The emptying disposal charges for cesspool or septic tanks apply to domestic and commercial premises.
