The Service We Provide

We maintain highway drainage systems to make sure they are safe and to prevent the highway from flooding.

The Council is responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of over 44,000 road gullies and subway grids and 6.5 km of roadside drainage channels.

All these are all cleaned at least once a year. More frequent cleansing is provided where traffic use or other factors, such as principal roads, industrial areas, dictate. All road gullies are cleaned using a gully flusher vehicle in accordance with the Council's Annual Gully Cleansing Schedule.

Streetpride also maintains highway drainage systems, such as drains, soakaways, storage pipes and flow controls. These systems are cleaned using special jetting vehicles. Excavation gangs may repair or replace highway defective drainage systems.

The Service You Can Expect

• We will respond within 4 hours of receiving an urgent report for a blocked road gully.
• Blocked gullies causing severe flooding are signed and guarded within 4 hours of notification and then cleared within 1 day, on working days.
• We will make safe missing manhole covers or collapsed highway drains and carry out any necessary repairs.
• Replacement highway drainage schemes are undertaken to replace and improve defective highway drainage systems.

The Service We Achieve

• Over 99% of all gullies are running freely after cyclic cleaning.
• Less than 5 reports are received of blocked gullies per 1,000 gullies per year.
• In 2007/08, we responded to 100% of urgent blocked gully reports within 4 hours of receiving the report.
• In 2007/08, 100% of reported blocked gullies were cleared within 1 working day.
