Grounds Maintenance

This page introduces the work of the Grounds Maintenance, Trees and Woodlands and Landscape Design Sections. All are part of the Streetpride Service.

The service we provide - Grounds Maintenance

Grounds maintenance work on Council owned land is controlled and managed by the Streetpride’s Landscape Group. Grounds maintenance services are both seasonal and varied and include grass cutting, maintenance of shrubs, roses, hedges and floral displays.

Extensive work is undertaken at parks, public open spaces, sports pitches, schools, social services grounds, housing open space, highway verges, miners’ welfare, and parish council sites. The service is delivered through a grounds maintenance contract with the Council's strategic partner, Ringway Highway Services Northern Ltd.

Although the majority of grounds work is described here, this is only an introductory guide.

Grass Maintenance

Grass cutting operations aim to produce an even height of grass and leave no areas uncut. A range of machinery is used, including tractor cylinder gangs, ride-on mowers and pedestrian operated equipment.

Our service standards list various categories of grass cutting. We aim for consistency across the borough. Most grass cutting operations do not include the removal of clippings. Arisings which fall onto paths or other hard surfaces are returned to adjacent grassed areas.

Where fences, walls, trees or other obstructions are in the grass cutting area, a mowing strip will be created to make cutting easier. Where grass areas are planted with naturalising bulbs, the grass will be cut between 6 to 8 weeks after the bulbs have flowered. Excessive clippings will be raked up and removed. The normal cutting regime will then resume.

All operations are undertaken in such a way as to cause as little disturbance to the public as possible.

Horticultural Features Maintenance - Herbaceous/Rockery/Shrub/Rose Plantings

Plantings are located throughout the borough to provide colour and interest to enhance the existing landscape. Any additional or replacement planting is carried out if funding is available.

Summer Seasonal Bedding Displays

Bedding displays are planted at limited sites around the borough such as key parks and Rotherham town centre to provide flowers throughout the summer. The beds are planted in June using summer bedding plants. Maintenance visits ensure the beds are weeded and dead headed.

Litter and Cleanliness

All grassed areas are left in a clean litter-free condition after each mow.

Litter and cleanliness have been highlighted as particular problems in urban parks and play areas over recent years, so we have improved the standards of litter clearance in line with government guidelines.

Work includes clearing all litter, emptying of bins and being positively active towards the removal of dangerous litter, such as broken glass. Also, fallen leaves are removed from urban parks, play areas, recreation grounds and Social Service sites.

Parks Furniture Maintenance

Park furniture, which includes, seating, signs, and bins etc, is maintained to a safe and acceptable standard throughout the year. Work includes minor repairs and painting or staining as appropriate.

Grass Cutting Standards at Sports Facilities

A detailed specification ensures the required standard of each sports facility is maintained. Work includes maintenance to football and rugby pitches, athletics facilities, bowling greens and cricket squares. These may be at parks, schools, miners welfare and parish council grounds.

The service we provide - Trees and Woodlands

The Trees and Woodlands team inspects and maintains trees on highway land, parks and other Council establishments. We provide an emergency call out service for dangerous trees and we take a proactive role in the management and maintenance of Council owned woodlands.
