'Monster of Birch Wood' footbridge

'Monster of Birch Wood' footbridge was constructed in March 2004. It is located in Birch Wood, near Hague Avenue in Upper Haugh, next to Warren Vale. The wood is one of Rotherham's ten 'Heritage Woods', that is an ancient woodland at least 400 years old.

Sheffield artist Jason Thomson, with the help of children from Rawmarsh Thorogate Junior and Infant School, designed the footbridge based on the mythical 'Monster of Birch Wood' and the Viking history of the area.

The footbridge was built mainly in weathering steel that will rust at first and then stabilise to form a brown patina blending in pleasingly with the environment. The handrails are stainless steel to provide a smooth and clean finish.

It was fabricated and erected by Mayflower Technology Ltd in Sheffield. The structural design was approved by Streetpride's Highway Structures team, who also designed the abutments. These were built by Streetpride's Schemes Delivery Team.

The scheme was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council.
