Bridge Strengthening

In the late 1980s, a programme of bridge strengthening was undertaken across England. Its purpose was to bring the highway network up to the new European standard for 40 tonne vehicles or an appropriate capacity to suit the local highway network. The programme included all bridges both privately owned, such as Network Rail, and publicly owned. The programme is now substantially complete.

Work carried out under the strengthening programme gives priority to principal road bridges. For substandard bridges on the non-principal road network, decisions are made whether to permanently weight restrict rather than strengthen. Each bridge is considered on its merits taking into account safety, economic and environmental factors.

In the borough of Rotherham, there are presently 6 bridges awaiting strengthening. Pending strengthening, public safety is maintained on those bridges by monitoring, using temporary weight restrictions or other measures and restrictions.
