Todwick Road, Dinnington ImprovementBookers Way to Church Lane, Dinnington
The bridge was officially opened on 16th October 2007 by Councillors Gerald Smith and Richard Russell, with Director of Streetpride Tom Knight, his design team and representatives from contractor Ringway Highway Northern Ltd in attendance. As part of the regeneration of the Dinnington area, Streetpride has carried out improvements to one of the major routes in the area. A scheme has been implemented to improve the B6463 Todwick Road, and the works included the construction of a new bridge over the railway. The old bridge was built around 1910 and it could not safely carry the weight of modern vehicles on two lanes, so traffic was restricted to one lane in alternate directions controlled by signals for many months. This, together with the relatively poor road alignment, prompted the development of a road and bridge improvement scheme which includes new facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and horses. It was only after lengthy consideration that the decision was taken to close the road to enable construction of the new bridge. The constraints of the site made it practically impossible to provide a temporary road crossing of the railway in this location. A temporary diversion route via Long Road, Hawk Hill Lane and Laughton Common Road has been upgraded for the diversion and was in use for 10 months to allow space for the construction works.A temporary bridge was erected for pedestrians, as well as gas, electric and telecommunication services, to cross the railway until the new bridge is ready.Demolition of the old bridge took place on 16th December 2006 during an overnight closure of the railway and construction of the new bridge followed. The scheme was funded by a partnership between the South Yorkshire Local Transport Plan Partnership and Yorkshire Forward. It was designed by Streetpride's civil engineers and it was built by the Council’s civil engineering contruction partner, Ringway Highway Services (Northern) Ltd.
