The Council promotes the reclamation or improvement of derelict, neglected or unsightly land, utilising a mixture of funding streams including grants.
The Council's role is to facilitate reclamation projects as they are often central to the regeneration of the local economy. The Council selects, determines the priorities and provides finance at an appropriate level for these projects. The Council's Planning and Regeneration Service carries out this function. In the last two decades, the Council has made excellent progress reclaming large tracts of land left by the mining industry. There is still a programme of reclamation projects, but in recent financial years because of a reduction in their budget for reclamation work, the amount of such work has reduced. The Council administers a revenue budget for the maintenance and management of land reclamation sites. The Council is responsible for the implementation of its reclamation schemes. The design work on reclamation schemes is undertaken by Streetpride's engineers. Geotechnical advice is obtained from the South Yorkshire Mining Advisory Service. Construction work is undertaken by either in-house direct labour or by Streetpride's engineering partner, Ringway Highway Services Northern Ltd. For very large schemes, Streetpride will invite Contractors' expressions of interest in tendering by advertisement in the European Construction Journal.
