Temporary Path Closures

The highway authority can also make orders to temporarily divert or close a public path in the interests of public safety to enable works to take place on or beside a route. Such orders are known as Traffic Regulation Orders.

Although Traffic Regulation Orders are not open to public consultation, they must be advertised in a local newspaper and on site notices at either end of the affected route.

If you are planning to carry out works which will affect the use of the path make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to prepare. Completed application forms need to be returned to the public rights of way team at least 3 weeks before the required start of the closure period.

There is a cost of £660.00 to make a Traffic Regulation Order to temporarily close a public path. This covers the cost of legal work associated with making the order and advertising.
