Street Lighting and Signs

The service we provide

Properly planned and maintained street lighting can provide benefits in crime prevention and safety for pedestrians and other road users.

The Council has over 36,000 street lighting units to maintain. All units are inspected for correct operation at night every two weeks during winter and every four weeks in summer.

All new and replacement street lights in estates and side roads use white light which offers better colour identification and has been proven to reduce crime and fear of crime. This form of lighting is also very efficient and is helping to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. All the energy used by street lighting and signs is from renewable sources such as wind farms.

Streetpride also maintains over 3,500 illuminated road signs, and many more that are unlit. Sign faces are normally replaced at least every 10 years. We also maintain road markings, highway seats, barriers, street name plates, traffic signals and other highway equipment.

The service you can expect

  • Traffic signal failures are attended to within 1 hour, and single bulb failures within 24 hours, on working days.
  • Street lighting faults reported by the public are repaired within 3 working days, providing the fault is not due to a supply failure.
  • We aim to have 99% of all streetlights working as planned at any given time.
  • We aim to improve the quality of lighting to the highway. Priority is given to the replacement of deteriorating older concrete columns to ensure that they are replaced before they become a potential danger.
  • Replacement schemes are also targeted at higher risk crime areas and roads where pedestrian use is higher, such as public transport corridors.
  • All electrical installations in the highway are regularly tested for safety.

The service we achieved in 2007

  • All traffic signal failures were attended within target times.
  • 85% of street lighting faults, not due to supply problems, have been resolved within 3 working days.
  • 98.9% of all lighting units were working correctly.
