If you want to construct a new driveway or garage on your property, you will want to lower the kerb so that your vehicle can easily and safely gain access. In some cases, visible and buried statutory undertakers' services and street furniture may be affected by your proposals. Sometimes the footway may need strengthening to carry the weight of your vehicle.
Consents
The kerb and the footway are the responsibility of the Council in its capacity as the Highway Authority. Accordingly, you will need consent to carry out this work. Please complete and return this
Vehicle Access Crossing Application Form (18 Kb)
If you are a tenant, you will need to ask for your landlord's consent. Council house tenants should ask 2010 Rotherham Ltd. If you own your property on leasehold, your deeds may require you to ask for your ground landlord's consent.
In every case where your property fronts a classified road, and occasionally when it fronts an unclassified road, you will need to submit a Planning Application. Consent is also needed if your property is a listed building or if it is in a Conservation Area. For more information on these aspects, please see the
Making an Access for a Vehicle page in the Planning section.
Your Contractor
We have a list of approved and recommended contractors for vehicle access (Drop Kerb) construction.
Vehicle Access Crossing Approved Contractors (31 Kb)
Please note the contractors are those recommended by the Council. Whilst they are preferred, you are not bound to use any of them, the final choice is yours.
Whoever you choose to carry out the works within the highway, please ensure that they have an up-to-date Roads and Streetworks accreditation certificate. It is illegal to carry out excavations within the highway without this qualification. You must also submit a copy of your contractors' public liability insurance certificate (minimum £2,000,000), along with his RASWA (Roads and Street Works Act) ticket as proof of qualifications.
Streetpride's highway construction team is able to carry out the work for you and of course they have the necessary certificates. There is no standard charge as there is a wide variation in the work needed at different sites. Feel free to ask Streetpride for a quotation. You will be under no obligation.
You will need to pay for any maintenance required to the crossing for 1 year, so you may wish to include this requirement when asking for a contractor's quotation.
