Local Government Chronicle Environment Award

Rotherham's Streetpride initiative has picked up a major national award for its efforts to keep the local environment clean and tidy. Representatives from the Council were in London on 14 March 2005 for the LGC Awards when Streetpride won the Environment Award category.

Streetpride was launched in September 2003 and aims to co-ordinate all the efforts the Council carries out to improve the look and cleanliness of the borough.

Councillor Gerald Smith, Cabinet Member for Economic and Development, said: "This is one of the top awards in local government and it is a great credit to all the staff involved that they have received this recognition on the national stage. One of the Council's priorities is to make Rotherham a great place to live in and Streetpride helps us do this. It is also another example of joined up working, linking together both our own departments and the expertise and knowledge of local people to improve our environment."

In the past year, Streetpride has dealt with 40,000 requests for work. Staff maintain over 1,100 kilometres of highways in a clean and safe condition for pedestrians, motorists, other road users and local communities.

Alongside that, more than 160 local schemes have been supported by the Streetpride initiative to enhance local environments. It also helps tackle crime and disorder by Streetpride staff acting as the 'eyes and ears' of the Council in local areas.

The scheme is working to encourage community involvement through the Area Assemblies, community clear-ups and This is an internal link icon. "Streetpride Champions" - local people who volunteer to contact Streetpride and report problems in their area.

Councillor Sue Ellis, Cabinet Member for Housing and Environmental Services said: "The response from the public to this scheme has been superb and it is a credit to both staff and the people of Rotherham that the town has won this award. Right from the moment someone calls the Streetpride hotline at our Contact Centre, the service means we can target our work and make sure problems are tackled efficiently."
