Cycle Training

Schools

The Council through their contracted cycle training providers, Cycling Experience, are offering free cycle training to the brough's Primary (years 5 and 6) and Secondary school pupils,. Especially those schools that have implemented a School Travel Plan which includes cycling as a means of travelling to and from school each day.

All pupils will be instructed on how to ride their bikes to the Governments new National Standard for Cycle Training, which has been designed to give the next generation of cyclists the skills and confidence required to ride their bikes on today's roads. All pupils will receive quality cycle training by fully qualified and accredited instructors in accordance with Bikeability which has replaced the old Cycling Proficiency test.

National Standards

The National Standards aim to promote a nationally agreed uniform syllabus and guidelines for all cycle training in the UK. These training standards have been developed in consultation with over 20 of the UK's leading bodies and organisations involved in providing road safety and cycling education including CTC, ROSPA, LARSOA, Cycle Training UK.

The National Standards have three levels:

  • Level 1 (Primary Pupils) is usually carried out in a traffic free environment. By completing Level 1, pupils will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip and undertake activities safely in a motor traffic free environment and as a pre-requisite to a road trip.

  • Level 2 (Primary pupils) is carried out on quiet roads but in real traffic conditions. By completing Level 2 pupils will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip safely to school, work or leisure on quiet roads (Level 1& 2 are carried out consecutively).

  • Level 3 (Secondary pupils) is undertaken on busy roads incorporating real traffic conditions and advanced road features. By completing Level 3 you will be able demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip safely to school, work or leisure on busy roads and using complex junctions and road features.

Adult Cycle Training (17+)

The Council through Cycle Experience will also be offering, to cyclists who live in the borough, a free initial two-hour training session to residents wanting to return to cycling but who are not confident because today's traffic conditions.

The cycle training will be basis on a route of the cyclist's choice, for example to and from work or as an alternative the cyclist can choose their own leisure route.
