Powered Two Wheelers

Introduction

The Council is promoting the use of small capacity powered two wheelers (PTW) as an alternative to the car. We are working with community transport operators to develop two 'wheels 2 work' schemes in Thurcroft and the Valley. 'Wheels 2 Work' schemes help people access employment and education opportunities through the loan of a scooter where other forms of transport may not be available.

Contribution to shared priorities

Reducing congestion - PTWs take up less road space than cars.

Accessibility - Many PTWs are cheaper to run than private cars. By improving conditions and parking facilities for users more people will be confident and able to access facilities that might not have been accessible without a car.

Air Quality - Small capacity PTWs produce less emissions than most cars and help improve air quality if the journey would otherwise have been made by a car.

Road Safety - The strategy aims to improve safety and security for PTW users.

Use of bus lanes for motorcycles

The PTW Strategy for South Yorkshire has been prepared by the Joint Authorities of South Yorkshire in consultation with motorcycle user groups. It was agreed during this process that the strategy would not propose to allow PTWs to use bus lanes, partly as the benefits of this are uncertain and also user groups did not express an interest in PTWs being allowed to use bus lanes. It was also decided that the strategy should be prioritised towards providing secure parking facilities and promoting training.

There are a number of pilot schemes across the country that have allowed PTWs to use bus lanes. When the findings of these pilot schemes are made available, and if it is found to be beneficial to an Integrated Transport Policy, there may be the opportunity to further investigate allowing PTWs to use bus lanes.
