Road Safety and Traffic Management

The service we provide

The Council is responsible for the safe management of all traffic on the public highway. This includes implementing measures to promote safe and sustainable transport and to offer a real choice in the movement of people and goods around the borough.

Our aims are achieved through funding made available from the Local Transport Plan to implement schemes contributing to targets in the plan. Examples of such schemes are:

  • Local Safety Schemes
  • Traffic Calming Schemes
  • Traffic Management Schemes
  • Pedestrian Crossing Facilities
  • Major Highway Schemes
  • Environmental Improvement Schemes
  • Bridge Strengthening schemes

The service you can expect

  • We will respond to any reports about highway safety and traffic management matters.
  • We will promote Traffic Regulation Orders to aid the free and safe movement of traffic on the highway network.
  • We will implement traffic calming, traffic management and local safety schemes throughout the borough to improve road safety and enhance the environment.
  • We will ensure that all bridges and retaining walls are inspected at least every two years to ensure they are safe.
  • Subject to funding, we will deliver major highway improvement schemes to ease congestion, offer improved provision for public transport and provide road safety benefits.

We will promote road safety measures to reduce the number of road accident casualties in accordance with national targets. These are to be achieved by 2010 based on the 2001 - 2004 average and are as follows

  • A 20% reduction in casualties involving people who are killed or seriously injured.
  • A 25% reduction in casualties involving children who are killed or seriously injured.
  • A 5% reduction in casualties where people are slightly injured.

The service we achieve

Striving to meet the targets set in the Local Transport Plan leads to a system of safer routes for all highway users, an improved quality environment and provides the opportunity for real choice in moving people and goods around the borough.
