Reducing the amount of 'compostable' waste, such as garden waste - grass clippings, hedge prunings and weeds, and other compostable waste such as vegetable peelings, fruit cores and cardboard is important. Compostable waste is a big proportion of 'biodegradable' waste, which also includes materials such as paper and wood.
From 2010 the UK will only be allowed to landfill a set amount of biodegradable waste each year or risk fines of up to £½ million A DAY from the European Union. The majority of European Union Member Countries will begin to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste they send to landfill from 2006, but the UK negotiated a longer lead in time.
