Give Waste Another Chance - Blue-Boxing Your Glass

Last year in Rotherham, we recycled over 700 tonnes of glass. That's the weight of 100 double-decker buses.

But it's still only about 7% of all the glass bottles and jars that get binned. We're aiming to do a lot better in the future.

Using your Blue Box for glass

Families in the UK use an average of 330 glass bottles and jars a year - nearly one a day. Rotherham's Blue Box scheme will make it much easier to recycle yours, rather than just throwing them away.

You can put any kind of glass bottle or jar in your Blue Box for collection. But before you put it in the box, please:

  • rinse it out, and
  • remove the lid or cork (but you can leave the label).

Please DON'T put other kinds of glass in the Blue Box, like window glass, light bulbs and oven glassware - they can't be recycled in the same way as bottles and jars. You can put them in your wheeled bin, taking the usual precautions when handling broken glass.
