Closed Landfill Sites

The Waste Management Unit also has responsibility for six closed landfill sites around Rotherham. We manage these sites to ensure the gases and liquids produced from the decaying rubbish inside do not build up to dangerous level.

We have invested in automated telemetry monitoring systems for effective gas management. This means we are able to dial into the site control from our offices to make sure that the flare system that gentle burns off the gases are operating correctly.

Leachate is the name given to the liquid resultant from the waste breaking down in the landfill site. This liquid can contain 'pollutants' that if released into a watercourse such as a river or stream may be harmful to the habitat. We therefore have leachate abstraction systems on sites to direct the leachate to the foul water sewer.

The Council is working with partner organisations, for example The Forestry Commission and South Yorkshire Forest Partnership to seek opportunities for the closed landfill sites to be of use again either as an asset to the community, such as leisure or through agricultural practice.

Collection & Disposal Contractual Arrangements

The operational part of the Waste Management Unit won the recently tendered Refuse Collection and Recycling contact to provide waste collection and recycling services until 2008.

Currently the Council has a waste disposal contract with Waste Recycling Group (WRG) until 2008.

The Council works with a number of merchants to provide recycling services. Where practical we aim to use near by merchants and end markets for our recyclables to reduce the environmental impact of transport.

South Herts Waste Management Ltd manage our Household Waste Recycling Centres, as part of a joint management contract with the sites in neighbouring Barnsley & Doncaster. The contract runs until 2008.
