Fascinating facts about waste
The UK produces 28 million tonnes of household waste each year. In just one hour we create enough to fill the Albert Hall to overflowing.
The amount of waste we all produce is increasing at 3% a year- which doesn't sound much, but by 2020 that'll mean double the amount to deal with - so we'll fill the Albert Hall in just ½ an hour!
So where does this vast pile of rubbish end up? Most of it simply gets tipped into large holes in the ground - the landfill sites.
What a waste! We could make good use of this stuff.
A lot of what we throw away could be recycled. And it makes real sense to do that, whichever way you look at it.
Recycling waste
By recycling more of the waste, we can:
- save landfill - reducing the need to find new sites
- save energy - reducing global-warming gases and pollution
- save raw materials - reducing pollution and spoil heaps
- save water - reducing shortages and contamination
The Council is committed to increasing the amount of household waste we recycle.
