Rotherham Municipal Waste Management Strategy 2005 - 2020

Background to the Strategy

Key changes are required in the way that waste is managed in Rotherham over the next 15 years. Increases in the amount of rubbish you send for recycling and composting means less of our rubbish goes into your black bin and avoids sending it to landfill sites for burial in the ground. Changes in National and European legislation mean that landfill is no longer the cheapest or most viable solution for disposing of household waste. Significant change is required to reverse the current reliance on landfill in the UK. National recycling targets also mean that the amount of waste we recycle in Rotherham must increase.

This is no small feat, given that we produce over 130,000 tonnes of waste in Rotherham each year, enough to fill Millmoor (Rotherham United Football Clubs Home Ground) twice! And this is continuing to GROW!

Through developing this strategy, Rotherham Council is setting out it's commitment to provide the new collection systems needed to achieve a step change in recycling levels in the borough and develop treatment facilities that reduce our reliance on landfill. The waste strategy sets out the framework for developing our waste services in the future.
