Give Waste Another Chance Blue-Boxing Your Textiles

As a nation, we throw away at least half a million tonnes of textile waste every year - and perhaps nearly double that, depending on which estimates you choose. Even at the lower figure, that's the equivalent of about ten pairs of jeans for everyone in Britain.

In Rotherham we collected about 2,400 tonnes of old textiles and shoes last year. We managed to recycle less than 4% of that total, but the new Blue Box kerbside collection scheme should make it possible to do much better from now on.

Using your Blue Box for textiles

In the UK, the average lifetime of a garment is about three years - but what we discard doesn't have to be wasted.

Rotherham's new Blue Box recycling system makes it very easy to recycle your unwanted textiles. You can put into the Blue Box:

  • any kind of clothing
  • bed linen and curtains
  • pairs of shoes (provided they're wearable).

Please make sure the articles are reasonably clean, and put them in carrier bags in the Blue Box. This is to protect them from the weather and also to keep them separate from other things such as cans.

Please DON'T put into the Blue Box:

  • anything that's heavily soiled
  • single shoes without a partner.
