This letter is from the archive collection of the Mountforths of Kilnhurst (ref no. 595-Z).

It was written by Elizabeth, Lady Fitzwilliam of Aldwarke, and dates back to the period between 1480 and 1503. It gives a fascinating insight into ancient life in the borough as well as a rare description of a working Roche Abbey, before the monks were forced to leave during the reign of King Henry VIII.
