Letter from John Guest to Edward Chrimes Jnr Regarding the Temperance Society

This letter is from local industrialist, John Guest, to his business partner, Edward Chrimes, dated Oct 12, 1844, relating to the Rotherham and Masbrough Temperance Society. It is from the Guest and Chrimes Collection (ref no. 33-B).

The Rotherham and Masbrough Temperance Society was a group who attempted to greatly reduce the amount of alcohol consumed in the borough and educate persons on its ill affects, much like the national Drink Aware campaign happening today. The organisation was formed on June 14, 1839 following a lecture held in the Court House regarding the principles of “total abstinence from intoxicating drinks”. Regular meetings were then held every Tuesday evening at the British school-room, and were so successful the movement was still strong in 1880 when John Guest died.

The catalogue of Guest and Chrimes has just been completed and is available in the newly catalogued archives folder. The collection includes records relating to the business of Guest and Chrimes and also some personal papers.
