Where can I get birth, marriage and death certificates from?
Copies of birth, marriage and death certificates for the Rotherham area can not be obtained from the Archives & Local Studies Service.
The local registers of births, marriages and deaths from 1837 are held at the
Rotherham Register Office, Bailey House, Rawmarsh Road, Rotherham S60 1TX (tel. 01709 - 823542).
Access to the actual registers of births, deaths and marriages is not available to the public but through indexes known as the General Register Office Index. Our Service does not have a copy of this but indexes are available at Sheffield Archives and Doncaster Family History Society.

I have an ancestor who lived in the Rotherham Workhouse. Do you hold any records?
If you think that an ancestor spent time in Rotherham workhouse you may find information in the records of the Rotherham Poor Law Union (ref 274-A).
The sources most likely to be of use are :-
The registers of religious creed (1887-1911, some years missing), which record name, place admitted from, religious creed and dates of admission & discharge.
The registers of religious creed and friends’ address books (1911-1932, some years missing) which also give year of birth, occupation, parish of residence and name and address of relative/friend.
The Guardian Minutes - most useful for the period prior to 1887. These often mention individual inmates.
Registers of births (1848-1879, 1912-1938) and deaths (1900-1937) in the workhouse.
The Poor Law Union functioned 1837-1929. Before 1837 individual parishes looked after paupers and you should refer to the parish records. After 1929 the workhouse continued as the Public Assistance Institution under the Borough Council. Some records are contained in 274-A and the Council’s Public Assistance Committee minutes (ref 61-C) also contain references to individuals.
