Who are children missing education [CME]?
Children of compulsory school age who are:
• Not on a school roll
• Not being educated other than at school
• Identified as having been out of any educational provision for a substantial period of time
Why do children go missing from education?
Children can go missing when they fail to start at a new school. They either fail to start primary education or go missing during the transition from primary to secondary school. It can also be when they move to a new town or city and fail to register with a new school there.
Why is it important to get Children Missing Education back in school?
Any child who isn’t in education is vulnerable, and this can make it even more important to make sure that by working together we can identify and locate these children as quickly as possible and get them back into education. Children missing from education will not have access to the opportunities to succeed that education provides.
Children who are not in school are at greater risk of involvement in criminal activity and becoming victims of crime themselves, and they are also at a higher risk of becoming victims of abuse.
