How many children are from ethnic minorities in Rotherham?

According to 2005 data there are 3,790 children: 2,277 in primary schools and 1,513 in secondary schools.

How many schools have children from ethnic minority groups?
Nearly all: only 3 schools do not have any children from ethnic minority groups.

What are the main ethnic groups?
The largest group by far is the British Asian group found mostly in central schools. These children's families are originally from Pakistan.

Who are Travellers?
The Term Travellers covers a number of different groups of people including, people of Gypsy, Romany descent, New Travellers, Showmen and Circus people and Bargees.

How can those people be Travellers if they live in houses?
Travellers of Gypsy/ Romany or Irish Heritage are recognised Ethnic groups under the Race Relations Amendment Act. Many people of Traveller background currently live in housing this maybe out of choice or because there is no other provision. Most Traveller people retain their cultural identity whatever their residential status.

What Site provision is there in Rotherham?
Currently there is no Traveller Site Provision in Rotherham.

What services are available for Travellers in Rotherham?
The LEA provides a Traveller Education Support Service which works across the authority with children, young people and families.

Who deals with evictions in Rotherham?
Evictions in Rotherham are currently dealt with by the Environmental Wardens Service.

What is the Welcome Centre?
A small project set up in December, 2002 by RMBC to cater for the needs and well-being of newly-arrived asylum-seeker children in Rotherham.

How old are the children at the Centre?
The Centre admits children aged from Y5 to Y11 inclusive. Y11 children are usually transferred fairly quickly to RCAT for intensive English courses with other older EAL students.

Where do the children come from?
Most children are from the Middle East and British or French ex-Colonial Africa. More recent arrivals have included children from Slovakia, and other children from the new EU nations can be expected.

How long do the children stay at the Centre?
This varies. Children with good English are placed in school as quickly as possible, but the paucity of free places in schools often means that such children stay at the Centre longer than is desirable. As a rule of thumb, we feel that an absolute maximum stay at the Centre should be one "old-style" (i.e. 3 in a year) school terms.

Where is the Welcome Centre?
The Centre is a single room in the old Unity Centre café building on St. Leonard's Road in Rotherham. Visitors are always welcome, but are asked to 'phone first - we often take the children off the site.
