My daughter is pregnant. Will she be able to continue her education?
Yes, in fact it is a legal requirement that she does until the end of Y11. She has the option of continuing at her mainstream school or attending the Rowan Centre, a small centre catering solely for pregnant school girls and school age mums.

If remaining in mainstream she would continue to attend until the latter stages of pregnancy. School would then provide work for her to complete at home and she would be expected to return to school about 6 weeks after the birth. There is no requirement for school to provide child care.

Alternatively, she may attend The Rowan Centre on Broom Lane. She would attend, usually from around six months into the pregnancy, and would be able to stay until she reaches school leaving age. She will receive help and support around pregnancy, birth and the care of a baby as well as her formal education. Support is offered post -16 through the project workers at the centre.

The centre has a nursery on site so she will be able to take the baby to school with her.

My daughter is pregnant and her school say that she will no longer be able to attend. Is this correct?
In some schools the corridors are very crowded and they are concerned about the safety and well being of a highly pregnant pupil. Hence either the girl moves to the Rowan Centre or school agree to provide a package of learning and support for the girl at home. She would be expected to return 6 weeks after the birth. It is also possible for the girl to attend Rowan in the latter stages of pregnancy and return to school following the birth of the baby.

Will she be able to take exams at the Rowan Centre?
Yes, a range of GCSE and other courses are offered at the Centre and delivered by specialist teaching staff.

How would she get there?
Girls are brought into school by taxi from the thirty sixth week of their pregnancy and then a taxi is provided until they leave school.

Would she have to attend full - time?
Yes, the Centre operates on a full- time basis. Links to Inclusion/Transport

How do I contact The Rowan Centre?
Referrals are initially made through the re - integration officer, Else Burton, who can be contacted 01709 740226 (Rockingham Professional Development Centre). She will visit you at home and arrange for you to visit the centre if you think it is suitable for your daughter.

Does she have to take the baby to school?
Girls are expected to take the babies to the Rowan Centre regularly. If alternative childcare is preferred then the girl would most likely be expected to return to main stream school. There is no cost for the childcare at Rowan.
