Does my child need a work permit?
Yes, if your child is aged between 13 and 16 years old and in compulsory education.
How do I get a work permit?
By completing an Application Form for a Work Permit which can be obtained from Education Welfare Service, Norfolk House, Rotherham . The form should only be completed when your child is offered a job.
How many hours can my child work?
This depends on the age of your child. Please refer to the Child Employment Fact Sheet.

How long does a permit last?
As long as your child is employed in the job relevant to the Work Permit. If your child gets another job they will need to apply for a new Work Permit.
Can a permit be refused?
Yes. When a Work Permit is issued Education Welfare Service writes to the child's school to ask if they agree. If they do not agree the Work Permit has to be withdrawn.
What time can my child work until at night?
The latest your child can work is 7.00p.m.

Who monitors/enforces working hours of school age children?
Education Welfare Service and School.
Can I get permission for my child to go modelling during school time?
Yes with the Head Teachers permission and a valid licence.
Does my child need a licence to appear in a dance/theatre school show for 3-5 nights?
The following types of performance need a licence.
Any performance:
• In connection with which a charge is made
• At a licenced premises or a registered club
• Any broadcast or any performance recorded by whatever means with a view to its use in a broadcast, or film intended for public exhibition.
• Children working in paid/professional sport
• Children working as a models (for which they receive payment)

What type of Performance does not need a licence?
• If a child does not perform on more than three school days in any period of six months (providing that the child receives no payment and there is no absence from school).
• School Performances
• Performances put on by a body of persons approved by the Secretary of State (Home Office) or in the Local Education Authority in connection with which no payment has been made to the child or any other person.
Whose responsibility is it to obtain a licence, parents or dance teacher?
Person responsible for putting on the performance (i.e. Dance Teacher, Producer etc).

What are chaperones?
A person registered with the Local Authority to supervise children engaged in public performances or entertainment under a licence issued by the Local Authority.
Are there any penalties if regulations are broken?
Yes - Any person who fails to observe any condition subject to which a licence is granted or make any false statement in connection with the application for a licence is liable to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale, or a term of imprisonment for a term not exceeding three months or both (Section 40 of the 1963 Act).
