Early Years Teacher for Children with Special Needs

The early years teacher works with very young children both in Local Educatonal Authority settings (nurseery schools / units) and also in the private and voluntary sectors (playgroups, day nurseries, private nurseries, childminders ect.)

Central to the role of the Early Years Teachers is the identification and assessment of children with a range of SEN as defined in the Revised Code of Practice 2001. This entails assessing the child in a variety of settings including the home which reflects the importance of parental involvement in the assessment procedure.

The Early Years teachers are available to offer advice to staff in LEA, Private and Voluntary settings at Early Years Action Plus, and to work closely with other agencies who may be involved with the child and family.

The Early Years Yeachers also offer advice and information to parents and carers on pre-school placements and services.
