Governor Support

Overview

The governing body, head teacher and senior management team together constitute the leadership team of a school. Governing bodies have become the strategic leaders of schools and are equal partners within the leadership team.

The main role of a governing body is to help its school provide the best possible education for its pupils; however as volunteers it is crucial that school governors are effectively supported in fulfilling these important roles and responsibilities.

The Governor Development Service aims to provide that support to governing bodies so that all children and young people in Rotherham can attain high standards of educational achievement.
Our main aim is to add value to the learning opportunities of all children and young people by supporting governing bodies to help raise standards in all schools through challenge, support and the celebration of good practice.

We achieve this by providing a comprehensive and professional advisory, support and training service to head teachers, governors, governing bodies and their clerks. A significant element of the Service is funded through a Service Level Agreement with schools.

Achieving the Vision

• Developing policy and strategy for all matters relating  to school governance Ensuring that governing bodies are enabled to fulfil their strategic leadership role in school improvement

• Securing the provision of a cost-effective quality assured governor service responsive to the needs of governing bodies and schools

• Securing the development, implementation and review of a programme of governor support, training and development

• Ensuring links are developed and maintained between the Service and other services supporting school improvement as determined by the Children and Young People’s Service Single Plan

• Using ICT to further support the effective working of governing bodies

• Ensuring local authority responsibilities are met

Objectives

The Service is working towards achieving quality objectives in eight key aspects of its work:
