Overview
The Primary National Strategy was launched in the summer of 2003 through the document ‘Excellence and Enjoyment. It places seven critical challenges before our schools and these are to:
- Take a fresh look at the curriculum, their timetable and the organisation of the school day and week and think actively about how they would like to develop and enrich the experience they offer children.
- Set a trajectory for continuous and sustained improvement in rates of progress in literacy and numeracy from 2003 onwards
- Commit to a programme of professional development for all their staff.
- Look beyond their school and learn from others.
- Review their strategies for involving parents in their child’s education.
- Embed the teaching of positive behaviour into the fabric of teaching and learning in the school.
Each Local Education authority has its own Primary Strategy Manager. The post in Rotherham is held by Will Ryan. There are primary strategy consultant leaders and teaching and learning consultants who promote excellence in Rotherham’s schools as part of the strategy.
The Primary National Strategy has at its heart the National Literacy and National Numeracy Strategies which it regards as essential in raising standards.
