Support for NQT’s and Induction Tutors

All NQT’s are required to complete a period of one year’s statutory induction, during which time they continue to meet the QTS standards and progress to meet more challenging Induction Standards. It is vital that both NQT’s and Induction tutors fully understand the regulations around induction, and both are strongly recommended to visit the Training and Development Agency this is an external link icon TDA website to access the guidance there.

All NQT’s must be registered with the Local Authority at the start of their induction year. Enquiries around this or any other aspect of NQT induction should be addressed to the LEA named officers below:

Induction Co-ordinator Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

Tel: 01709 822576

Karen Borthwick
Induction Co-ordinator Key Stage 3, 4 and Post 16

It is a legal requirement that all teachers, including NQT’s, are registered with the General Teaching Council. NQT’s are also strongly advised to join a professional association. Links to both are available on the useful links.

Rotherham offers a programme of training and support for both Primary and Secondary NQT’s, beginning with a Welcome Event at the start of the Autumn term. To view details of the support and training programme for NQT's for the current year follow the links below:

Support for ITT Mentors

Various opportunities exist for teachers acting as ITT Mentors [also known as School Based Tutors or SBT’s] to gain recognition or accreditation for their work with ITT students. These qualifications can both enhance mentoring practice and contribute to career development. Two routes are provided by Sheffield Hallam University and by the General Teaching Council.

Sheffield Hallam University Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Development and Training

ITT mentors working within Sheffield Hallam University’s partnership are expected to complete Initial Mentor Training after which they can enrol for a Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Development Training. This involves completing a work based learning assignment, with tutorial support from SHU. The Certificate can be accredited towards a full Masters degree.

For full details contact Sheffield Hallam University CPD team on 0114 225 5565 or visit the SHU website.

GTC Teacher Learning Academy [TLA]

The General Teaching Council for England [GTC] in partnership with the TDA have now extended the pilot Teacher Learning Academy [TLA] project to ITT mentors. Mentors can record work undertaken within a common framework initially developed within the Yorkshire and Humber region, and now accepted as a national standard.

In common with other TLA projects work can be submitted at one of four levels. Level 1 is the minimum submission leading to recognition by the GTC. Levels 3 and above are more detailed critical submissions which can be accredited at up to 30 Masters level points.

Full details of the TLA pilot and application procedures can be found in the TLA section of the GTC website.
