National Strategy for PE and School Sport and Club Links in England

In 2003 the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) published 'Learning through PE and Sport', setting out a National strategy for PE and School Sport and Club Links (PESSCL) in England .

The strategy's aim is to deliver the joint Government Public Service Agreement (PSA) target to:

'Enhance the take up of sporting opportunities by 5-16 year olds by increasing the percentage of school children who spend a minimum of 2 hours each week on high quality PE and School Sport within and beyond the curriculum from 25% in 2002 to 75% by 2006, and 85% by 2008.'

The Government is investing more than £459 million in the PESSCL Strategy across the country in order to meet the PSA target. This will be achieved through the delivery of nine programmes, each of which is aimed at contributing towards achieving the PSA Target.

    The nine programme areas are:

    Specialist Sports Colleges

    School Sport Coordinator programme

National Professional Development Programme for PE QCA PE and School Sport Investigation

    Swimming

    Coaching

    Step into Sport

    School to Club Links

    Gifted and Talented programme

A partnership PESSCL strategy for Rotherham is currently being produced and is at the first consultation phase of the process.

The aim of the strategy within Rotherham is to improve the understanding of how high quality PE and School Sport can be used as a tool for whole school improvement, particularly in terms of improved behaviour, attendance and attainment.
