The main activities of the service are
Admissions | as required by the Education Act 2002 and the new codes of practice and the 1998 School Standards and Framework Act, to manage the strategic and administrative procedures for the council's admission policies. Principally this involves the consideration and processing of all parental preferences for the relevant year groups (Reception, Y3, and Y7) in primary and secondary, transfer requests and supporting the Council's case at parent's appeals against these decisions.

School Organisation | as required by the 1996 Education Act, to manage the legal and administrative procedures in relation to the Council's duty to provide sufficient and appropriate places for pupils. Principally, this involves the production of and consultation on the School Organisation Plan, which lays out the contextual planning framework; and bringing forward relevant school organisation proposals based on that framework.

Asset Management | to liaise with Economic and Development Services in the production of the Local Education Authority's Asset Management Plan for its education estate; and to integrate this with the Council's Asset Management Plan for its whole estate. Principally, this involves the production and consultation on the Schools Capital Strategy and Local Policy Statement/Statement of Priorities, which then informs the Capital Programme.

Health and Safety | To develop and maintain suitable and sufficient Health and Safety and Emergency Planning practices. Principally this involves the production of, consultation upon and consequent training on policies and procedures.

Capital Resources | to develop and monitor the Education Capital Programme. Principally this involves the creation of both an annual and a medium to long term capital programme for the education sector; and the monitoring of this and the Culture and Leisure components of the Programme Area; and to liaise with other Council Areas to ensure the above fits with and contributes to the Council's Single Capital Pot Strategy.
The Authority has established a central core PFI team, drawn from across all the service areas of the Council, with a brief to lead on major capital improvements. The School Organisation, Planning and Development Team will need to liase with this team in order to co-ordinate the implementation of major capital improvements.
