August's Theme is... Read the Game
The Beijing Olympics begin on the 8th August, so this month we're looking at sport and reading.
Meanwhile, why not read more about the creation of the modern Olympics - from Mount Olympus to the Middle Kingdom - in our online resource,
Encyclopeadia Britannica (just click on the link and enter your library card number).

July's Theme was... Rhythm and Rhyme
This month we're celebrating poetry and music lyrics: from Shakespeare to Shakira and Keats to Keane!
Why not discover the power of poetry by borrowing a book of poems next time you visit the library? Try one of the Nation's Favourite Poems... collections to get you started.
Search the online catalogue and reserve your copy now!
Or you can listen to your favourite poet reading their own poems here:
The Poetry Archive
Children can visit their own version of the site, where they can even 'Ask a Poet' at:
Children's Poetry Archive
Do you think poetry is 'boring' and something you left behind at school? Well, I bet you've got a favourite song which is just a poem set to music really. Take time out to actually listen to the lyrics of a song rather than focussing on the tune: poetry isn't just about Keats and Byron; Jay-Z, Madonna, David Coverdale, Duffy etc. can all be classed as poets in their own right!
The
Central Music Library stocks a whole range of CDs, including Pop, Classical, Light, Jazz, and soundtracks from films and shows, new and old.
What poem or song moves you to tears of sadness or laughter? Tell us in the
The Reading Room

June's Theme was... Reading Escapes
If you were stuck on a desert island and you could have one thing to read, what would it be? The latest football scores on your mobile or a magazine to check what the celebrities are wearing while you’re stuck in a castaway outfit? Or maybe just your favourite book...
Let us know what your 'desert island read' would be in the
The Reading Room blog.
Or, find out what other readers
Top 5 books are - you might be tempted to give one a try!

May's Theme was... Mind and Body
Reading is not all in the mind – it’s in the body too. This month’s theme is all about celebrating the links between reading and health.

April's Theme was... Read All About It!
Reading is everywhere and it’s not just about books: you can read anything, anywhere and anytime.
What do you like to read? Where do you like to read it? Tell us in the
The Reading Room.
Reading is: newspapers, magazines, comics, graphic novels, short stories, braille, subtitles in films, text message, websites, online games, computer screens, blogs, signs, emails, audio books, podcasts, websites on your mobile, storytelling...
And you can do it anywhere: at home, at work, on the bus, in the park, cafes, waiting for the doctor, in bed, at the station, in the bath, in the garden...
