Imagination Library

Welcome to the Imagination Library which was launched by Dolly Parton in Rotherham on the 5th December 2007.

Thank you to everyone who has expressed in an interest in signing their children up to the scheme. There’s been a fantastic response so far and we’re now working our way through all the hundreds and hundreds of applications we’ve received.

The scheme is being rolled out during 2008 so don’t worry if you’ve not heard from the Imagination Library just yet, we’ll be contacting you as soon as your application’s been processed.

What is the Imagination Library?
The Imagination Library is a collection of books posted to a child every month for 5 years making a possible total of 60 books.

Why does my child need these books?
Reading is the most important skill a child can have. Sharing books with children encourages their speaking and listening skills, improves their vocabulary and prepares them for their own independent love of learning.

What kind of books are they?
They are well known books written for children of different ages and chosen by a panel of Literacy and Library experts.

Who can join the Imagination Library?
Any child who lives in Rotherham can join as long as they are aged between 0 and 5 years old.

It takes about 8 to 10 weeks from registering your child until the first book is delivered to your house.

What else do I need to do?
• Complete the registration form
• Return it to the Imagination Library, Norfolk House Walker Place, Rotherham S65 1AS
• Encourage other families with children 0 - 5 to register

Are there any other activities that can help me to read with my child?
Your local library, Children’s Centre, school, playgroup and other organisations will have information and advice on how to read with your child and may offer other family learning activities that you can go to.

The Imagination Library is funded by Organisations, Charities and Individuals who sponsor the cost of the books and postage. This cost is currently about £2.50 per child per month making a total of £125 for the full 5 years if a child registers at birth.
