PE and School Sports
Welcome to the Rotherham PE and School Sport Website
Never before has there been such an exciting time for PE and School Sport in Rotherham.
PE, Sport and Health issues are now top government agenda items, with the aim of improving the health of the nation and tackling the ever-increasing obesity crisis.
The government has invested more than £459 million in PE and School Sport to encourage lifelong participation in sport and physical activity of young people, in order to tackle these issues and create a 'Physically Literate' society.
The National PE and School Sport Club Links strategy - 'Learning through PE and School Sport' aims to increase participation of all 5-16 years olds in high quality PE and School Sport to 85% by 2008. This will be achieved through a multifaceted approach to the provision of high quality PE and School Sport opportunities both within and beyond the PE curriculum.
The 2006/7 PE and School Sport Survey identified that 84% of schools in Rotherham are currently offering 2 hours or more of high quality PE and School Sport.
Recognition is growing nationally for the way in which PE and School Sport can greatly contribute to whole school improvement and health and fitness issues, thereby helping to create stronger and more vibrant communities.
Great strides have been taken in Rotherham over the last few years to improve and increase PE and Sport opportunities for all young people, and 2007-2008 will see further expansion of existing and new initiatives.
The new Rotherham Strategy for PE and School Sport was released in September 2005, and sets out a 3 year partnership action plan to develop and improve PE and School Sport provision across the Borough.
Key agencies within Rotherham PE and School Sport are working in partnership to deliver the national strategy at a local level. These include RMBC, Schools, Rawmarsh and Wickersley Sports Colleges (and their associated School Sports Partnerships), Schools, North West Education Action Zone, South Yorkshire Sport, Community Clubs and many more.
