Rotherham's walking is second to none, and to celebrate the fact the town organises a nationally acclaimed, 2 week Walking Festival held annually in July. The festival attracts thousands of visitors and extends a warm Yorkshire welcome to old friends and new. The festival's guided walks and special events programme is a great way to explore Rotherham's beautiful and picturesque countryside.

The Visitor Centre stocks a range of leaflets on self-guided walks, cycle and horse riding routes to assist you in uncovering the delights of this area. Why not amble along the Cuckoo Way (Chesterfield Canal) said to be the prettiest towpath in England or enjoy the serene atmosphere at
Firsby Nature Reserve.
If challenge walks are more appealing, then why not try the Rotherham Ring Route, a 50 mile circular walk around the boundary of Rotherham. The route information is supplied in an anticlockwise direction in ten guide leaflets, available from the Visitor Centre, priced at £2.00. For those completing the walk there are badges and completion certificates available.
Rotherham is linked to the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Network, which can easily be divided into three sections:
- Rother Valley Country Park to Rotherham (9 miles)
- Rotherham to the picturesque estate village of Wentworth (11 miles)
- Wentworth to Wath via Elsecar, Dove Canal and Wath Wetlands (6 miles)
Rotherham offers a wealth of countryside activities for all year round enjoyment. Whether you're a walker, cyclist, watersports enthusiast or just enjoy the outdoors, a visit to this area is an excellent way of exploring this beautiful and golden part of Yorkshire.
