Health & Well Being

Keep more active more often! Exercise could include household work, walking up and down the stairs, gardening or getting off the bus a stop earlier and walking to your destination.

Introduce physical activity in to your everyday routine and gain the benefits of increased fitness levels helping to make everyday life easier and more enjoyable.

Choose an activity that suits you and is enjoyable. Try brisk walking on a regular basis. Walk with friends and enjoy a good social time to!

Recommendations for adults are 30 minutes of moderate physical activity 5 times a week gradually increasing your time as your fitness level increases. As you confidence grows try different or new activities. Visit your local leisure centre for information or advice on what is available within your area.

Eating healthier!

  • Eat regular meals on a regular basis
  • Cut down on biscuits, cake, fried foods etc
  • Eat more fruit and vegetables in your diet.
  • Recommendations are 5 portions of fruit and veg a day
  • Drink lots of water

The benefits of regular physical activity are:

  • Improved weight management
  • Improved self esteem and body image
  • Reduces the chances of depression or mental stress
  • Increases cardiovascular fitness and strength
  • Helps normalise blood pressure and promote a healthy heart
  • Maximise bone and mineral density
  • Improved sleep
  • Reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later life
  • Management of other risk factors

And above all have fun and meet new people! Take up new challenges!

Come along to one of our exercise classes and get fitter and healthier in a fun and sociable way!

Active Always Swimming

A gentle 45 minute exercise to music class with a qualified Instructor. The sessions are £2.00 and include a free swim at any RMBC pool with a voucher from the Instructor at the end of a class.

Active Always Badminton

Based at Herringthorpe Leisure Centre these sessions are targeted at those 50+ to improve skills, team building and overall fitness. Held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday sessions are just £2.00 each.

Osteoporosis 2000 'Be Agile - Not Fragile'

Exercises for strengthening joints and ligaments to help with movement and ease pain. Sessions are held every Tuesday 12:30 to 1:30pm at This is an internal link icon. Herringthorpe Leisure Centre. Cost: £2.00 per session.

GP Recommendation

The Council has links with the local hospitals where recommendations to Leisure Services for people to become or to stay active are received from GPs, Physiotherapist and consultants. Recommended patients follow programmes of recovery or rehabilitation for specific illness related problems.

Children's Obesity

Targeted for children 8-9 years of age this 12 week programme includes exercise sessions and educational elements. Currently for referrals only.

Active Always – Keep Moving – “Falls Prevention”

A new exercise class aimed at providing exercise for those who have gone through rehabilitation following a fall. The 45 minutes sessions are held at This is an internal link icon. Herringthorpe Leisure Centre on Tuesday morning between 11.00am and 12.00pm. Clients must be referred.

Restart

Rehabilitation exercises for people recovering from or preparing for heart surgery and angina sufferers to increase overall fitness and encourage a speedy recovery. Sessions are held every Monday 5:30 to 6:30pm at This is an internal link icon. Thrybergh Sports Centre.

Healthy Mind Healthy Body

Weekly gym sessions for referred patients aimed at increasing confidence and physical activity out of a hospital setting. Held at This is an internal link icon. Herringthorpe Leisure Centre.
