Rotherham Council and 2010 Rotherham Limited are committed to meeting the Decent Homes Standard for all our housing by 2010.
However, investment only to the Decent Homes Standard does not necessarily make houses comfortable, safe and attractive, or reflect the lifestyle needs of our current or future tenants.
Therefore, we need to make decisions on which properties to invest-in and which will not provide long-term sustainability for all neighbourhoods in Rotherham.
We have to be forward thinking and make proactive asset management decisions by:
-
Identifying investment to that needed to meet the Decent Homes Standard to ensure letability and sustainability;
-
Demolishing, replacing or remodelling neighbourhoods which are unsustainable due to excessive amounts of poor quality housing which has no or little demand;
-
Replacing and/or demolishing poor quality housing or otherwise out-of-date stock;
-
Remodelling neighbourhoods to ensure that we make the best use of the public money available to us;
-
Demolishing unhealthy housing, such as those that are structurally unstable or have untreatable asbestos problems.
These decisions are taken with full consultation with local residents. Our Asset Management Team acts as a facilitator; talking face-to-face with residents, providing written information and arranging public consultation exercises for those affected. If a decision is taken to demolish housing, then we help residents in a number of areas;
-
Provide face-to-face advice and a contact person
-
Help residents find suitable and alternative accommodation
-
Provide a financial allowance of up to £3500 to reduce the cost of moving
-
Ensuring the property is safe before it is demolished
If you have any questions or concerns about the demolition process or with to be involved in any future consultation then please contact Darren Schofield on 01709 824365.
