Building Control - Dangerous Structures
Buildings and structures can become dangerous for a variety of reasons, for example through neglect, vandalism, weather, or through the effects of a fire, explosion or impact from a vehicle. The legislation to deal with a dangerous building is contained within the Building Act 1984, Sections 77 and 78.
A building may become dangerous at any time. If it presents a potential danger to the public, we will take the necessary action to remove the danger through powers which require the owner of the building to carry out works to make the building safe. If this fails, we will direct contractors to make the building safe and claim all reasonable costs incurred from the owner of the building.
The Building Control department will respond to a call from a member of the public, Police or Fire Services on a 24 hour, 365 days a year basis. We aim to respond to a dangerous structure request within 1 hour during normal working hours and within two hours outside normal workinhg hours.
Reporting
If you need to report a dangerous structure, contact can be made through Building Control during office hours on 01709 823841 or South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, out of hours.
