Planning Permission Needed?

Changes to Householder Developments

From 1 October 2008 the government is introducing new guidelines to constitute what classes as permitted development for work to domestic households. Permitted development basically means building work which can be carried out without the need for a planning application.

The key change is that the previous allowance to build extensions to a property up to 70 cubic metres or 15% without planning permission will no longer apply. Instead the limits will be defined by maximum dimensions and distances.

Other changes affect loft conversions, roof alterations, other buildings in the garden, paving over the garden or drive and renewable energy equipment.

Below is a list of common householder projects, click each one for a link to the Planning Portal page giving an overview of the changes coming into effect.

It should be born in mind that these changes in the Planning rules for householders wishing to extend or alter their properties, will not affect their requirement to make a Building Regulations application (which principally deals with health & safety aspect of the building).
