The Rotherham Town Centre Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) is a component part of the broader Town Centre Renaissance programme and Housing Market Renewal strategy.
The aim of the initiative is to contribute to the wider regeneration of the town centre by bring historic buildings back into beneficial use. It will complement and add value to other initiatives such as the Living Over the Shops programme, shop fronts improvement scheme, High Street Rejuvenation Project and public realm improvements.
The enhancement of public realm is common to both the THI and Renaissance objectives. An integrated approach to the enhancement and where appropriate, the historic restoration of key spaces within the area will be adopted.
Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan for the Rotherham Town Centre Conservation Area.
The Conservation Area Appraisal for Rotherham Town Centre Conservation Area was produced by the Council, with the help of planning consultants Woodhall Planning and Conservation, in May 2005.
This document has recently been revised and updated and follows the latest advice of English Heritage, published in 2006. It provides a detailed appraisal and history of the town defining the special character of the conservation area. Added to the earlier document is also a Management Plan for the Conservation Area that puts in place measures to preserve and enhance the character of the conservation area, and a smaller defined area within it that relates to the Townscape Heritage Initiative.
