South Yorkshire Communities Online Partnership

Successful Bid for Government Funding

The South Yorkshire Coalfield Partnership has been successful in its bid to attract Government "Invest to Save" Funding for an innovative research project which provides the opportunity to take fundamental steps in changing and improving public service delivery and access to information.

South Yorkshire Communities Partnership

Is an organisation consisting of various agencies who each provide a service to the citizens of Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster, working together in a range of co-ordinated approaches to improve services overall. The partnership includes the local authorities, health authorities, and voluntary agencies from the three areas.

The Project (South Yorkshire Communities On-Line Project - SYCOP)

At certain critical times throughout our lives we all need access to information and services from a wide range of public sector and voluntary organisations. The performance of individual organisations may well be admirable. Often, however, there is confusion and overlap between the different providers.

There are specific events (eg, birth, death, becoming unemployed, leaving school, leaving hospital, family breakdown) which require many sources of information to be accessed and acted upon quickly and in a concentrated way. The provision of this information is not co-ordinated, leading to information often being duplicated, inconsistent, difficult to understand or access, and/or confusing. The people most at risk are likely to be those least able to gather the information for themselves.

The objectives of the project are to: research and recommend those "life events" which are most relevant and important to the people of the area; determine the sources of that information, and the best format for its delivery; pilot mini projects to test information access methods; and in the long term to use the research to improve sustainable inter agency working and enable more effective service delivery.

The agencies involved will depend on the life events chosen, but will include Government agencies (eg DSS), Local Government agencies (eg Registrars, Benefits, Education, Social Services), Health Authorities, and numerous voluntary agencies. By working together in this innovative way, these agencies will be demonstrating their commitment and responsibility to the people in greatest need.

We have invited all the organisations we know who we think may be interested in this opportunity to join us in these ground breaking challenges, but we are aware that we may not have a complete view of the market, so if your organisation feels that it would like to know more, please contact sycop@doncaster.gov.uk to discuss it.
