In general these premises include offices, shops, warehouses, catering establishments, hotels and residential accommodation, leisure and cultural facilities, consumer services such as beauty therapists and launderettes, etc amongst others. In Rotherham this accounts for over 3000 premises.
We do not have any enforcement responsibility for:
- Manufacturing or factory premises;
- Our own Local Authority work or premises;
- Work in domestic premises;
- Agricultural activities;
- Engineering plants;
- Education/training facilities;
- Hospitals or doctors surgeries;
- Fairgrounds;
- Construction work.
Our work includes:
- Inspecting premises and work activities;
- Advising on and enforcing the law where necessary;
- Investigating complaints about poor working conditions, or concerns about working practices;
- Investigating workplace accidents and dangerous occurrences;
- Registration of skin piercing activities, and ensuring that hygienic premises and activities are performed and maintained;
- Input into public entertainment licences.
Officers also contribute to a number of other partnerships, such as the joint Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and Primary Care Trust Skin Cancer Group, the Smoke Free Rotherham Team and the Workplace Health Advice Management Service.
We are the enforcing authority for a number of other pieces of legislation. These include certain aspects of the Working Time Regulations and the Sunday Trading Act.
A large proportion of our time and effort is spent in an advisory role to businesses, employees or concerned members of the public about health & safety issues.
As well as advising businesses face to face during our visits, we can advise over the telephone, and can provide free information and guidance leaflets. We can also signpost people for further help and assistance where appropriate.
We issue press releases throughout the year and target specific businesses with specialist mailshots if appropriate. We also provide information and displays at other events across the borough, such as Rotherham Show, Library Information Roadshows and ad-hoc events, such as public firework displays.
