    Infectious Diseases / Food Poisoning

Officers in the Food, Health and Safety Team are involved in the investigation and control of all diseases which could have an environmental source, eg food poisoning, Hepatitis A, Dysentery.

There are a number of diseases which are "notifiable". A list of Notifiable Diseases can be downloaded:

    Reporting

Local doctors and the Health Protection Agency inform us of cases of food poisoning and notifiable diseases so that we can find the cause of the illness.

    Investigation

Environmental Health Officers endeavour to investigate each case to prevent the spread of illness and establish the possible causes.

Advice is given to the patient on how to prevent the spread of disease within the home.

If you think you have food poisoning you should consult your doctor as soon as possible. If you are a food handler, care worker, etc, you should advise your manager. You should also follow the Fitness to Work guidelines. You can obtain an advice sheet from the Department of Health, PO Box 410, Wetherby LS23 7LN.

As part of the investigation you may be required to fill in a questionnaire which asks about the foods you have eaten and symptoms you have suffered. You may be asked to provide a stool sample. These are examined by the Health Protection Agency laboratory.
